Nuvolo messaggero, Centuria d’amore, Le stanze dell’amor furtivo
DESCRIZIONE-
eri tu a chiamarli in causa
ininterrotto;
—e, in fondo, sei soltanto tu, dopotutto.

Abitudini: un ritorno
Doloroso da perdere, e lontano
eppure troppo facile da riportare indietro. Si guarda intorno,
ed anche questa volta, aspetta,
ad occhi fissi. Inevitabile, immanente,
Abitudini: liberazione
È solo adesso che posso piangere davvero
il nostro noi come farebbe qualcuno,
qualcuno conosciuto, e amato un’era fa,
è solo ora che posso realizzare
sì, che è per davvero: se n’è andato.
È la stagione a farci piangere. Come
possiamo amare qualcuno oltre
il pensiero, la parola, la ragione; andare
avanti, poi, e tornare indietro mai;
ancora piangi? È solo in questo istante
che posso amare qualcuno, ed è forse
uno che farà presto ad invecchiare,
lo so, ma saprà darmi amore.

Habits: Remnants
Listen, let’s get this straight: it isn’t you I miss, not you at all.
Warm rain—its scent and smoky song are what I miss, not you at all.
Nor all that jazz – the moon, the stars, the wine, the flame – that you conjured
before our verses grew old. That was a promise, not you at all.
A sky, an earth, this air, the awning, your mouth, my tongue, the impress
of skin on skin—these I hold as love’s edifice, not you at all.
Last week at the laundrette I tripped; a block-printed quilt snagged the heart.
A new voice pulled away my feet from the abyss, not you at all.
Yes, I’ve grown to like pine seeds and salted caramel, to worship
Steve Reich. But, surely, that’s what they call osmosis, not you at all.
I swear I’d spring-cleaned you from the mind. So I feign, when I find
slivers of laughter, a cinnamon-coloured kiss, not you at all.
The past invades our present, still imperfect yet continuous;
becomes a mutant who sings from each interstice, not-you-at-all.
By the Pleiades, by the quicksilver moon, I renounce the heart’s
feints, I will drink from this harvest chalice—it’s all you, after all.
Habits: Return
Painful to lose, far
too easy to recover. Turn around,
and there once again, unblinking,
it waits. Inevitable, immanent,
that thing you would flee but seem stuck with forever, almost.
Almost.
Almost a lisp, less than a hare lip?
There are habits and there are habits. Breathing is a habit I try to acquire.
You are the one I try to shed.
Habits: Release
I can mourn us now like someone,
someone I knew, loved an age back,
and learn has gone. It’s the season
to mourn. How can we like someone
beyond thought and word and reason;
then, move on; and never backtrack,
yet mourn? I can now like someone,
one who’ll age, I know, but love back.
