Katerina Gogou was born in 1940 during the Second World War and the Axis Occupation of Greece, for which she did not spend a pleasant childhood. She had a strict father with whom she lived during her childhood. Afterwards, in her teenage years, she lived with her mother.^[1]

Non fermarmi. Sto sognando.
Abbiamo vissuto proni secoli d’ingiustizia.
Secoli di solitudine.
Ora no. Non fermarmi.
Ora e qui, sempre e ovunque.

Verrà il tempo

Verrà un tempo in cui le cose cambieranno.
Ricordatelo, Maria.
Ricorda, nelle pause del gioco, Maria,
di quando correvamo impugnando il testimone
– non guardarmi – non piangere. Sei tu la speranza,
ascolta, verrà un tempo
in cui saranno i figli a scegliere i genitori
non verranno fuori a caso
non ci saranno porte chiuse
con persone curve là fuori
e il lavoro saremo noi a sceglierlo
non saremo come cavalli cui si guarda in bocca.
Le persone – pensaci! – parleranno coi colori,
con le note.
Abbi solo cura di conservare
in una grande bottiglia d’acqua
parole e concetti come
disadattati – oppressione – solitudine – prezzo – profitto – umiliazione
serviranno per la lezione di storia.
Non voglio mentirti, Maria, sono
tempi difficili.
E ce ne saranno altri.
Non so – non aspettarti troppo da me –
questo ho vissuto, questo ho imparato, questo io dico
e di tutto ciò che ho letto una cosa conservo con cura:

Our life is jack-knifings
in dirty dead-ends
rotten teeth, faded slogans
basso vestiario
smell of piss, antiseptics
and spoilt sperm. Ripped-off posters.
Up and down, up and down Patission Ave
Our life is Patission Ave.
The powdered fetergent which does not pollute the sea
And Mitropanos sang his way into our life
but Dexameni has also swallowed him
like those high ass ladies.
But we are still here.
We travel all our life in lust
the same course.
Humilation-loneliness-despair. And vice versa.
Ok. We do not cry. We grew up.
Only when it rains
we secretly suck our thumb. And we smoke.
Our life is
pointless painting
in programmed strikes
snitches and patrols.
That’s why I tell you.
Next time they shoot us
we shan’t run away. Count our strengh.
Let’s not sell our skin so cheap, damn it!

L’attrice, cantante e poetessa greca Katerina Gogou [Κατερίνα Γώγου] nacque ad Atene il 1° giugno 1940 e vi morì suicida, il 3 ottobre 1993, all’età di 53 anni. Ha recitato in oltre trenta film. Tra i suoi ruoli, voglio ricordare l’interpretazione che lei stessa dà di alcuni suoi testi in Parangelìa, un film del 1980 sulla vita di Nikos Koemtzis (l’uomo che uccise tre persone e ne ferì altre otto – alcuni di questi erano poliziotti in borghese – in un locale “bouzouki” ateniese, scontando poi 23 anni di carcere e diventando una sorta di icona dell’underground ellenico). La poesia della Gogou è nota per i contenuti anarchici e la forma assai scarna e diretta, che avvicina molti dei suoi scritti all’immediatezza del punk. Qui si propone un testo postumo. La traduzione, molto faticosa, è opera mia. Spero però che vengano altri, molto più degni di me nella tenzone col greco contemporaneo, a dare il giusto risalto all’opera di Katerina.

Katerina Gogou was born in 1940 during the Second World War and the Axis Occupation of Greece, for which she did not spend a pleasant childhood. She had a strict father with whom she lived during her childhood. Afterwards, in her teenage years, she lived with her mother.^[1]

She was married to film director Pavlos Tassios, with whom she had a daughter.^[1]

Later in her life she got addicted to alcohol and drugs. She was found dead in her apartment in October 1993 due to a drug overdose.^[1]

Acting

From the age of 5 years she started acting in children’s plays. Professionally she debuted in theater with Dinos Iliopoulos’ theater company in the play Ο Κύριος πέντε τοις εκατό (Mr. five percent) in 1961. She made her first cinematographic appearance in the film Ο άλλος (The other one / The other person). Most of the films she participated in were Finos Film productions. She became more widely known for roles of cheerful and carefree women like in the movies Το ξύλο βγήκε από τον παράδεισο (The wood came out of paradise – note that “ξύλο”, literally translating to “wood”, in Greek is an idiom meaning “the act of hitting someone”) and Μια τρελή τρελή οικογένεια (A crazy crazy family). She has received the award for best actress in a lead role in Thessaloniki International Film Festival for the film Το βαρύ πεπόνι (The heavy melon – this phrase in Greek is an idiom referring to someone who tries to appear as a macho man), directed by Pavlos Tasios.^{[citation needed]}

As a poet she was known for her revolutionary and aggressive writing. She was an anarchist and her political identity was often reflected in her poems, such as “Υπερασπίζομαι την Αναρχία” (I support/defend Anarchy) or “Εμένα οι φίλοι μου είναι μαύρα πουλιά” (My friends are black birds).^{[citation needed]}

She also wrote some books with one of them, Τρία κλικ αριστερά (Three Clicks Left), being translated into English in 1983 by Jack Hirschman and published by Night Horn Books in San Francisco^[2] and also into Turkish in 2018 by Turkish author Mahir Ergun and published by Belge International Publishing House in Istanbul.^[3]

Katerina Gogou was participating actively in the anarchist movement, especially in the Exarcheia neighborhood of Athens. She supported anarchist prisoners and participated in movements for the liberation of political prisoners. She had been arrested several times, one of which as a suspect for the murder of two police officers by the Revolutionary Organization 17 Noemvri, for which she was declared innocent. She had a bad relationship with the police, having filed a complaint after being attacked by police officers during a protest.^[1]
